ALWAYS use a headline.
Listen, this isn’t rocket science and it shouldn’t come as news to anyone in business that you MUST use headlines in your marketing.
The power of a great headline is undeniable. Don’t believe me? Remember the last time you read an article or watched a segment on the news that you weren’t planning on? Well, why did you do that? I’ll tell you why.
Because you read or heard a headline and you were interested or curious enough to learn more. Right? Yep, just like the rest of us.
Anyhoo, if you’re serious about writing killer headlines, and want a quick lesson on writing them effectively, there’s only one place to look.
Your local book store.
There, you’ll find all the tabloids and magazines you’ll need to strengthen your headline writing muscles. All you need to bring is a yellow pad, a pen, and a few hours to invest honing your new skill. And what a skill it will be!
Now this is where it gets tricky. Grab a few of the crazy tabloids and several dozen magazines. Find all the headlines you can and handwrite them out. All of them.
Once you do this, start writing headlines for your own product or service. I know most people won’t do this, they won’t invest the time. DON’T be one of those people. Set aside the time and you’ll be amazed at how quickly this skill will pay serious dividends.
Make your copy easy to read.
Your job, while ethically persuading your reader to whatever CTA [call to action] you present, is to make reading your copy ULTRA-easy. Your goal is to make reading your copy as easy as sliding down a greased pole.
Don’t believe me? Take a look at copy from some of the best copywriters in the world, and you’ll notice that it’s not only easy to read, but it even LOOKS easy to read.
You’ll rarely see paragraphs longer than 4 or 5 sentences. For example take a quick peek at this page. Pretty underwhelming, isn’t it? And that’s the point.
The last thing you want to do is overwhelm your readers’ brain BEFORE they start reading.
Break up your copy by using short sentences, pictures, sidebars, quotations, and sub-heads to help pull your readers down the page. Also, while writing, work hard to…
Dumb down your vocabulary.
Listen, DON’T treat your readers like idiots. Bad idea. Do, however, make your copy as easy to read and understand as possible. Some copywriters say to write at an 8th grade level, others say 5th grade.
Whatever. The point here is to use big [Adult] words sparingly and keep your writing simple.
I know, I know. It’s not a smoking-hot, sexy copywriting secret, but it works. Trust me. I’ve proven it time and time again. Test it for yourself. I think you’ll be amazed at how well it works.
Write one to one NOT one to many.
It doesn’t matter how many eyeballs are reading your copy, ALWAYS write like you’re having a conversation with just one person. Think about what you do when you’re talking to someone, learning about someone, getting to know someone. What do you do?
You ask questions about THEM. You talk about THEM. You use the words you, your, you’re, yours, maybe even ya’ll (in the South) in the conversation.
You don’t spend the whole time talking about you. Think about it, if all I did in this report was talk about me, myself and I, you’d think I was a big selfish jerk and [unless you’re my mother] you would have stopped reading already. Right?
Well, your customers, clients, or patients feel the same way about you and your business. Don’t make the mistake of only talking about you, your products and services.
